Megestrol Acetate is used as a steroidal progestin and progesterone derivative (specifically, a 17-hydroxylated progesterone) with predominantly progestational and antigonadotropic effects.
Though sometimes referred to simply as megestrol, it is important to clarify that megestrol acetate is not the same as megestrol, which is a closely related but different compound.

The introduction of production methods available for 16 or 17 alpha epoxy progesterone by hydrogen bromide open-loop and nickel catalyzed reductive debromination, generate 17 alpha hydroxy progesterone, then through acetylation and acid hydrolysis produce 17 alpha acetoxyl group progesterone, then with triethyl orthoformate etherification and Vilsmeier reaction 3 – ethoxy – 6 – formyl – 17 alpha acetoxyl group pregnant steroid – 2, 5 – diene – 20 – ketone, finally with potassium borohydride reduction, acid hydrolysis, dehydration and go with the goods.
